“Bigas, hindi bala” was made during our Visual Communication class, 2020 last year. The context of the poster started when Pres. Duterte declared “Shoot to kill” referring to violators of the health protocols on April 1st, 2020

The Inspiration

The declaration of shoot to kill during the lockdown brought netizens to voice out the concerning situation.

Purpose of the Advocacy

The context of the poster implies the hardship of having a lockdown and that the lower class were the ones most affected. In general, it’s harder for people to work and provide for their families with this kind of threat. The threat to life did not help in maintaining safety protocols, it only intimidated people. Meanwhile, relief operations were not enough and did not supply everyone. Watching the news, not all barangays were able to cover their population. This resulted in people going out, with risks of a deadly disease, only to provide food and adequate supply which is the government’s responsibility in the first place.

Execution

“The psychology of colors led me to compliment the 2 colors, yellow and green. I wanted yellow to represent ‘betrayal’, which implies the government's orders.”

Filipinos did not know what to do and can only rely on the government, thus violating human rights. Meanwhile, green represents ‘inexperience’ which shows the incompetence of the government’s response. This idea was the first thing I got since the poster was made during the declaration. Since my little brothers can't get the right angle the way I wanted it, I requested my brother to be my main subject. The materials needed were just grains, a clear sheet of plastic cover and 2 mobile phones for the lighting. It was one of my favorite shots this lockdown although there is a lot to improve on.
